The clock starts ticking

It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ (Mark 15.25-26)

The clock starts ticking. The nails have been driven in, the cross beam raised with Jesus attached, raised so that all can see him, so that all can see his agony. The clock starts ticking and time begins to take on a different pace, for him, for the watchers, for the witnesses, for us. ‘How long, O Lord, how long?’ The clock starts ticking and Jesus hangs there.

Lord of time and of eternity,
sustain those for whom time will go slowly today;
those watching a loved one in pain,
those waiting for important news,
those with time but nothing to do with it,
for us, watching, waiting with Jesus.
Amen.
